Running the Seneca Creek Greenway Trail Marathon in May means spending 26.2 miles following a dedicated path through the Maryland suburbs north of Washington DC, and the flatness of this course is genuinely one of its defining features. You won't battle elevation, which sounds appealing in theory, but flat marathons demand a different kind of mental toughness than hilly ones do. There's nowhere to hide, no long downhill sections to recover on, and no elevation changes to break up the monotony of your effort. The Seneca Creek Greenway itself is a rails-to-trails conversion, so you're running on what used to be railroad bed, which means the surface is predictable and the grade stays consistent. The trail takes you through Damascus and surrounding areas of Montgomery County, passing through sections of suburban sprawl mixed with patches of genuine greenspace. You'll see residential neighborhoods giving way to tree cover, small bridges crossing the creek itself, and the kind of Maryland landscape that is green and pleasant without being dramatic. For much of the race, you're either in direct sun on the open trail or moving through tree tunnels where the creek runs closer, which in May can actually be a blessing when temperatures start climbing mid-race. The real challenge of this marathon comes from the sheer relentlessness of the flat terrain and the potential for tedium over 26.2 miles on what is essentially one long path. There aren't many landmarks to tick off mentally or significant transitions between different parts of the course that break the race into digestible chunks. The crowds and support will likely be limited to the start, finish, and scattered aid stations, so this is a race where you need to bring your own mental game and your own motivation. By mile 18 or 20, on a flat course in May heat with minimal terrain variation, the psychological weight can become heavier than any hill. That said,
