The Carmel Marathon is a long-distance running event held annually in Carmel, Indiana. It is recognized as the second largest marathon in the state and has received multiple national awards. Historically, marathons trace their origins to Ancient Greece, inspired by the legendary 490 BC run of the courier Pheidippides from the battlefield at Marathon to Athens a tradition formalized in the first modern Olympic Games and standardized to the 26.2-mile (42.195 km) distance in the early 20th century.
